"In like manner, almost all popular superstitions are vulgar interpretations of some grand maxim or marvelous secret of occult wisdom." - Eliphas Levi
Hermeticism? Occultism? Esotericism?
Firstly, let's define these words properly as they are often misunderstood or misrepresented, especially the word "occult". These words simply indicate the hidden nature of the information they describe. The word "occult" comes from the Latin word "occultus". It literally means 'clandestine, secret, hidden, etc'. The word "esoteric" simply implies that the information will not readily be understood by the masses. It means that the information is targeted at a crowd with a specialized interest and preexisting knowledge of that interest. Hermeticism is a set of philosophical beliefs based largely upon the writings of Hermes Trismegistus and his followers, thus the name HERMEticism. Most occult and esoteric teachings stem from or connect to Hermetic Philosophy.
These words (especially "occult") are often associated with darkness, demonic activity, devil worship, and other negative things. This is not so. Much of modern occultism has been taken over by such things but that is not the nature of these teachings. This view of the hidden knowledge was most likely designed by the establishments and elite in an effort to dissuade the public from seeking this knowledge. What better way to get people to stay away from something than by convincing them that the thing is evil, dark, or otherwise corrupted. Do not let this social engineering keep you from diving into the hidden to find greater understanding. The study of the hidden leads to rapid expansion of consciousness and understanding. When the hidden knowledge is combined with an appropriate level of understanding in regards to modern science and physics, there is nothing that cannot be understood.

The Kybalion
Without a doubt, the Kybalion is the strongest starting point for anyone interested in such things. The Kybalion is a short book mostly describing the Seven Hermetic Principles. These Principles are the basis for many New Age teachings as well as the vast majority of occult teachings. Not only that, these Principles are now supported by modern physics. If you are serious about your spiritual development and the expansion of your consciousness, it is highly recommended that you spend a bit of time on this short book. Once you have sufficient understanding of these Principles, you will begin to note them in every part of your life. By simply becoming aware of these Principles and understanding them to an appropriate degree, a gigantic leap can be made.
The Seven Hermetic Principles are:
I. The Principle of Mentalism - This Principle tells us that All is Mind
II. The Principle of Correspondence - As above, so below. As below, so above.
III. The Principle of Vibration - All things vibrate. Nothing is at rest.
IV. The Principle of Polarity - All things have their poles.
V. The Principle of Rhythm - All things are subject to rhythmic operations.
VI. The Principle of Cause and Effect - Every effect has a cause and every cause has an effect.
VII. The Principle of Gender - All things have their masculine and feminine properties.
