This is the first of a series of lessons to be made available here on the site. These lessons will take a look at how the Hermetic Principles and Philosophy can be validated and applied but more importantly they will also attempt to describe a plausible theoretical view of the structure of reality based on the known Laws of Physics as well as the Hermetic Principles. Debate and discussion is encouraged as any potential holes in this theory or in the Hermetic Principles themselves need to be discovered.
In this document, we will be reviewing the Big Bang by applying the Seven Hermetic Principles. We will review each principle first so that the reader may have a sufficient understanding of these principles even if they have no understanding of it currently. We will look at each Principle and see how it can be applied to better understand the Universe and to better understand ourselves. By applying these Principles along with the Laws of Physics and the findings of modern science, we can begin to understand the structure and nature of almost anything up to and including the Universe in which we reside. Such understanding is not only useful but crucial in attaining Self Mastery. With greater understanding of the Universe comes greater understanding of ourselves. This allows us to expand our consciousness and gain increased depth. With a thimble sized consciousness you have a thimble sized awareness. With an ocean sized consciousness you have an ocean sized awareness.
So what are the Seven Hermetic Principles? They are simply seven laws that accurately describe the behavior of the systems and energies around us. They are akin to the Laws of Physics. These Principles were described by the great masters and illuminated/enlightened ones of old. They have been passed down, tweaked, tested, experimented with, and evaluated for thousands of years; from the Babylonians to the Egyptians, to the Hebrews, to the alchemists and occultists of more recent history. These Principles can be found described in all cultures and societies in some way or another. They can be found in the symbolism and rituals of all religions and spiritual systems. They have been noted and recognized by many that did not even realize what they had recognized. Even modern science (particularly the fields of quantum and theoretical physics) has begun to validate and confirm these Principles as true and infallible. These Principles are not a belief system or a religious methodology. They can be recognized and applied by all. They can be understood and used by the atheist, the Christian, the Muslim, the Satanist, the Scientologist, and whoever else though they may expose certain religious ideals as being unlikely, basic, and just downright wrong.
The Seven Hermetic Principles
I. The Principle of Mentalism
II. The Principle of Correspondence
III. The Principle of Vibration
IV. The Principle of Polarity
V. The Principle of Rhythm
VI. The Principle of Cause and Effect
VII. The Principle of Gender
Now, the first thing we must do is describe what these Principles are so that the reader can proceed with a proper understanding of them before trying to apply them. If the reader wishes to have an even greater understanding of them then it is suggested that the reader examine The Kybalion.
The Principle of Mentalism
This Principle is the first that needs to be understood. Without this understanding, it is impossible to truly understand the nature of the Universe. The Principle of Mentalism explains that EVERYTHING must exist inside of an Infinite Mind of sorts. It is imperative that we do not get caught up in trying to define this Infinite Mind. It is a fruitless endeavor. No matter what you believe, the human mind can always ask, “What created that or what came before that?” If we say that God created the Universe, then what created God? If we say that the Universe is purely material and originated from a Big Bang for no reason at all, then who created the material from whence the Big Bang erupted? This line of thought is deceptive and can lead us to false conclusions and beliefs. So then, we must either accept that we cannot currently know or put the matter out of our minds entirely.
So then, when it is said that everything must exist within an Infinite Mind we are merely saying that this entire Universe must be contained and created by something at some point. Everything must be contained within an Infinite Mind. The entirety of the Universe is simply the mental creation of The All. The All is a term used to describe the highest point on the pole so to speak. The All is the entirety of everything in this Universe and whatever other Universes one might imagine or encounter. This Principle is the highest Principle that one must understand prior to understanding the nature of the Universe. Until the reader can grasp the fact that the Universe is a MENTAL thing rather than a material thing, the reader will struggle to understand the true nature of it all. This Principle is considered the Master Key that unlocks many doors to the temple of knowledge. With a firm understanding of this Principle, understanding of the other six principles becomes a sure thing.
However, do not be discouraged or turned away if this Principle does not make sense entirely at this point. Continue onward.
It is important to note that ‘mental’ may be a synonym for ‘spiritual’ depending on the readers outlook. As long as the Principle is understood, it matters not what words are chosen.
The Principle of Correspondence
As above, so below. As below, so above.
This Principle states that there is a correspondence between the various levels and planes of the Universe. Simply put, this means that all systems adhere to the same laws. Modern science has more than proven this Principle to be true. No matter the scale, this Principle is inescapable. An electron orbiting the nucleus of its atom is not much different than a planet orbiting its star. All things operate in this manner. No matter how large something is, it is still a part of something even larger. Cells are a part of organs are a part of animals are a part of ecosystems are a part of Earth is a part of the solar system is a part of the galaxy and so on and so forth. No matter how small we scale down or how large we scale up, this correspondence is undeniable.
This is the second highest Principle for good reason. By learning to notice this Principle in the world around us, we can learn exactly how similar everything really is. By learning to apply this Principle, we can learn to understand that which was previously unable to be understood. By applying this Principle, we can learn what we thought we could not and make sense of things thought previously unknowable.
The Principle of Vibration
This Principle states that all things are in constant motion. Everything is always moving. Nothing is at rest. Modern physics has proven this to be true as well. This Principle explains the reason for the different states of things in the Universe and that reason is varying rates of vibration. Physicists have determined that matter is simply energy condensed to a slow vibration with light being a very high vibration. The Mind/Spirit are the highest on the vibrational scale being in such rapid vibration that they seem to be at rest. Think of a rapidly spinning wheel and how it appears to be solid and motionless. Even now, the atoms of the reader are in constant motion as electrons revolve around their atoms at incredible speeds.
This Principle can be applied to control mental vibrations and change them at will. This allows for the willful altering of consciousness to achieve the desired state of mind or level of perception. This allows access to the higher planes of the mental and spiritual. It is said that, “He who understands The Principle of Vibration, has grasped the scepter of power.”
The Principle of Polarity
This Principle states that everything is dual in nature. Everything has two ‘poles’ or a pair of opposites. This states that many things are actually identical in nature yet varying in degree. The most obvious example of this is light and dark. One cannot exist without the other and they are often thought of as being two opposites. Really, they are just different degrees of the same thing. What is darkness but an absence of light? So then darkness is just a smaller degree of light while light is a higher degree of darkness. They are the same thing.
Once understood, this Principle can be applied to understand the duality of things. This Principle can be used to better understand the emotions and natures of those around us. Once mastered, this Principle can be called upon to perform ‘mental alchemy’ of sorts and used to balance oneself in any situation.
In modern times, this Principle is accepted by many but simply called by a different name. Many of the New Age Movement adherents and similar call this Principle ‘Duality’. Again, the terminology is of little significance as long as the reader grasps the concept behind the terminology.
The Principle of Rhythm
This Principle deals with the fact that everything has tides. All things flow in and out. Life and death. Start and finish. Forward and backward. It can be related to the swing of a pendulum. If things go one way they must go the other way as well. What goes up, must come down. This is yet another example of old wisdom being validated by modern science. This Principle barely needs to be discussed because almost everyone understands it to be true.
This Principle can be applied to increase our understanding of the systems and events that we are a part of.
For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.
The Principle of Cause and Effect
This Principle states yet another idea confirmed by modern science. Everything has a cause and all causes have effects. This is taught in elementary science classes. This Principle will not be discussed at this point because it is assumed that the reader understands this most basic concept.
The applications of this Principle should be obvious.
Again, for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.
The Principle of Gender
This last Principle states that all things have both masculine and feminine properties. This Principle is a bit redundant when compared to The Principle of Polarity but it is also a bit different. Due to the complicated nature of this Principle, it will be explored later more thoroughly (as will all of The Principles).
What does need to be understood by the reader at this point is that The Principle of Gender is not the base, minimized, and twisted concept of gender that modern society has imposed upon us. In reality, this Principle has very little to do with human male and female interaction when compared to what it is actually describing. Do not continue with any preconceived notions of gender or any political angle on the topic as it will diminish the reader’s ability to understand how to apply this Principle. For now, it is sufficient to view the Principle of Gender from a purely mental perspective. The masculine properties of the mind are manifested via the conscious mind while the feminine properties are manifested via the subconscious mind.
The use of this Principle can be a little tricky and complex. For this reason, it will be discussed in greater detail later. This brief introduction is simply to familiarize the reader and ensure the rest of this is understood as best it can be.
Let us discuss the order of the Principles and why that order is important. The Principles are arranged from most important to least important. The last few Principles merely build upon previous Principles. The first two Principles are of unrivaled importance. Using only these two Principles, one could ‘discover’ the remaining Principles even with having no prior knowledge of them. The third, fourth, and fifth Principles can be used to better understand the Universe but they are even better when applied to the process of mental transmutation. Using these three Principles, one can induce any state of mind or level of perception. Using these three Principles, one can overcome emotional distress, intellectual stagnation, and even physical ailments of the material body. The last two Principles simply help us to iron out details and intricacies of the first five. They are still of immense importance and understanding them is absolutely imperative for true Self Mastery. The intent is not to reduce their importance but rather to simply describe their role.
Now that we have gone over the basic definitions, order, and applications of these Principles, we can begin to actually examine them in depth. We can begin to see and learn how they conduct the Universe and ensure proper operation of the systems therein. At this point, the reader should spend some time pondering and examining each of these Principles. Try to see them in daily life and in the smallest details. If you feel satisfied that you have a basic understanding of these ideas, then continue reading.

Infinite Mind vs. Limited Mind
Another idea that the reader must understand before really grasping the Principle of Mentalism is the difference between what is meant by an ‘Infinite Mind’ and a ‘Limited Mind’. It is really very simple.
As material beings, our minds are somewhat limited by our material existence. We can never really fully escape our material existence while maintaining our humanity. As long as we exist in material, human form we have a Limited Mind. We are heavily focused on the material. We are localized and have this perception of separation. For these reasons, our thoughts and understanding are limited.
An Infinite Mind is simply a mind that is not limited by anything. It is free to operate on any planes, in any space. Think of it as if one is freed of their material body and then their mind is able to permeate all of space and time between the very particles of every atom and molecule. It is this type of mind that is responsible for the creation of this Universe. It is this type of mind that is The All. All things created by an Infinite Mind are inside of that Infinite Mind thus all things in our Universe are contained within The Infinite Mind of The All.
The Principle of Mentalism
As we dive into pondering the structure and nature of the Universe, inevitably one question will always come to mind. No matter what belief system or philosophical doctrine, the question always remains. That question is simply, “Who or what created all of this and who or what created the thing that created all of this?” This question can be presented over and over with no answer in sight. Christians believe that their God created it all….then the question still arises. Who or what created the Christian God? The same can be asked of the mainstream scientific explanation of creation. Sure, the Big Bang created all of the Universe. Who or what initiated the Big Bang and who or what created the original material required. No matter what, this question can always be presented once the ‘beginning’ has been described. So then, how is this conundrum avoided? How is this seemingly impossible question reconciled? The answer is simple. We cannot know. In our current form with our current capacities there is just no way to really answer this question. The All is unknowable. We must accept this or put the matter out of our minds entirely. If not, we risk becoming deluded. If we get hung up on this detail, we cannot begin to explore the nature and structure of this Universe.
However, the Principle of Mentalism gives us a more firm grasp of the origins of the Universe and the reasoning behind the origins. If we understand that the Universe is Mental, All is Mind, we can begin to see how it all came to be. For the sake of simplicity, think of this Principle as indicating that this Universe exists within the mind of another being. While this is not really accurate to the highest degree, at this point the reader can use this idea to better grasp the Principle of Mentalism. The truth of these matters will become apparent in time. So then, if this Universe exists within the Mind of another being we can see what exactly is meant when the Hermetics utter the phrase, “The Universe is Mental.” The Universe exists as the mental creation of an Infinite Mind. This is how nothing can exist outside of The All and how The All is Mind. If the Universe is the mental creation of an Infinite Mind then so is all consciousness within this Universe. This means that by default any creations of any consciousness within the Universe are further creations of the Infinite Mind that dreamed all of this up to begin with. What else? That also means that any ‘new’ part or idea of the Universe that is ‘discovered’ is still contained within the Infinite Mind of The All. Even if we were to somehow create an alternate universe within this Universe, the alternate Universe would still be a creation of the Infinite Mind and thus it would be subjected to the same Laws and Principles.
Now, do not place too much relevance on the idea of our Universe existing inside the Infinite Mind of another being. This is an oversimplification employed simply for the sake of understanding.
This idea DOES NOT discredit any known scientific theories or evidence. Actually, this only further coincides with modern science and theory. In the following paragraphs, the reader will develop and understanding of exactly how modern science and these Hermetic Principles line up and how they complement one another. The Big Bang falls perfectly in line with these Principles as the reader will begin to see.
All things created by an Infinite Mind are inside of that Infinite Mind thus all things in our Universe are contained within The Infinite Mind of The All.
The Big Bang
To understand how these Principles dance with modern science, one must understand modern science. So then, the topic at hand is the Big Bang. This will be a brief description and explanation of the same.
The Big Bang is a theory that states the Universe began billions of years ago when all matter and energy exploded from a single super-hot, super-dense point. This explosion propelled all matter and energy (and all consciousness) to begin expanding outwards away from the singularity. Modern scientists support this theory with very sound mathematics and measurements. Due to the complex nature of the topic, we will not expand upon the scientific evidence for the Big Bang theory though further study should be done on the topic. Proceeding once again, shortly after the Big Bang, there was no matter. The Universe was far too hot for atoms to even form or bond. Only energy was manifested. The Universe was essentially a bunch of super-heated particles. Once it cooled down, particles began to bond and form atoms. Atoms began to bond and form molecules. Molecules began to give rise to stars and planets. Stars and planets began to be forced into position by the forces that govern the Universe (gravity, magnetism, etc). After a while, the Universe was almost as we know it now. Then, in the primordial soups and chemical pools that were on the planets (at least our Earth for sure), life emerged. Life began evolution and evolution lead to sentient, self-aware life. Now, here we are. Each stage of the evolution of the Universe took less time than the stage before it. The Universe essentially gets more and more complex at a faster and faster rate. This is the main point the reader should note from all of this. The Universe has a tendency, a nature to increase in complexity at a faster and faster rate.
The Principles and the Big Bang
Now we will begin to validate and apply the Principles with a scientific filter. The Principle of Correspondence is an excellent Principle to use in conjunction with science as science has really hammered this one down. It is very easy to see how the idea of ‘As Above, So Below’ can be applied to so many different things. From atoms to galaxies, from neurons to the known Universe, from ecosystems to solar system, all things follow this pattern of correspondence. This is not to say that all things operate on an identical basis but that all things correspond to both higher and lower systems and planes. The purpose of a skin cell is vastly different than the purpose of a liver cell yet both cells contain the same information and operate on the same principles. Likewise, one could relate a skin cell and a star system. They are drastically different in purpose yet they function in quite a similar manner.
So then, let us apply this to the structure and function of the Universe we exist within. Let us take The Principle of Correspondence and see how it can shed even more light on the Big Bang Theory than scientists already have. Again, this is easy to see. The Universe we live within simply follows the same cycles that all things follows. This is really The Principles of Polarity and Rhythm at work more than The Principle of Correspondence yet the Principle of Correspondence tells us that since all lesser systems follow The Principles of Polarity and Rhythm then so shall the ENTIRE Universe. What does this mean? It means that by applying the Principle of Correspondence and realizing that The Principles of Polarity and Rhythm must be in motion even before, during, and after the Big Bang, that the Big Bang is simply the start of yet another endless cycle of life and death. High tide and low tide. In and out. Expansion and contraction. Positive and negative. Light and dark. Heat and cold.
This is easy to reconcile with modern science. Just as the Big Bang exploded and sent the Universe into an infinite expansion, so too shall the infinite expansion turn to an infinite contraction. According to the Laws of Physics, the expansion caused by the Big Bang will eventually run out of energy if no more energy is added. The energy will be transferred into many different forms. Think of an explosive device. Once it explodes, it sends shrapnel every direction. When the energy of the explosion dissipates, the shrapnel ceases to fly and only heat is left from the initial explosive energy. The same is true of the Universe. The expansion will run out of initial energy. Now, there are some theories that have the Universe ending as a frozen cosmic wasteland. There are other theories based on evidence that the Universe is actually SPEEDING UP as it expands due to dark energy. These theories often end in the idea that this expansion may speed up more and more until everything is torn apart and matter can no longer exist. Scientists also theorize that the Universe will reach a point where things are so expanded that the Universe begins to be overtaken by the forces of gravity and will contract again. This is the theory this article deals with though all of these possibilities are able to be reconciled via the Hermetic Principles. However, our understanding, our observation of the Universe leads us to believe expansion and contraction to be the most logical. Even with the Universe still accelerating apart, we currently believe that contraction makes the most sense. The Universe may expand faster and faster for a long time due to dark energy but, eventually, it seems logical to believe that this dark energy will also subside. As our understanding of dark energy develops, we will develop more accurate models for ‘the end’. Moving forward again, as the Universe cools, gravity will begin to counteract the explosive force generated by the Big Bang. This means that, eventually, the Universe will cease to expand and begin to contract. This contraction will start slowly and then, as more and more matter gets crushed together the forces of gravity, will become magnified and intensified. The Universe will contract more and more rapidly. All consciousness, energy, and matter will be smashed together to form another singularity destined to explode again in yet another Big Bang. This process is incredibly lengthy when compared to a human lifetime yet it is a process that has happened and will happen countless times.
In the name of good science, we will also be publishing articles examining the Hermetic Principles against the other theories of ‘the end’. We do not disregard them as possibilities and readily admit that there is no hard evidence to suggest that the Universe will crunch down again. If new evidence emerges to suggest that this theory is unlikely or impossible, we will adapt. This is the nature of true science and should be the nature of all spiritual seekers. We must change our beliefs if they are proven false. This is imperative.
If we zoom out far enough and think big enough, we can see that not only does the Big Bang Theory validate The Principles of Correspondence, Polarity, and Rhythm, it validates The Principle of Vibration as well. We already know and accept that all atoms/particles are constantly vibrating. Physicists have adequately demonstrated this concept. If we apply The Principle of Correspondence, we can begin to see that this Vibration must be in effect all the way up and down the scale. So, zoom out far enough and imagine the Universe as a whole. Imagine the singularity from whence everything was born. Imagine the Big Bang and the subsequent expansion. Then, imagine the contraction that inevitably begins once the energy of the Big Bang subsides. Next, the Universe collides into a singularity and then explodes once again into expansion. On a long enough timeline, this would look exactly like a vibrating sphere. A sphere constantly growing infinitely large and small over and over again.
What’s more, this theory also satisfies The Principle of Cause and Effect. Anyone that has taken elementary level science classes is fully aware of this Principle as it is accepted without question by any intelligent point of view. Science and religion are in agreement on this one. There is a cause for every effect and an effect for every cause. This relationship of cause and effect creates a never ending web, tree of effects and causes. The cause and effect that drives the Universe is simply The Principle of Rhythm. Each Principle builds upon and validates another. The expansion is the cause for the contraction while the contraction is the cause for the expansion.
The Principle of Gender and the Big Bang
This Principle is the least understood and has the least scientific evidence to support it. This is not due to a lack of truth but rather it is due to the fact that this Principle deals less with physical phenomena and more with mental and spiritual phenomena. That is not to say that The Principle of Gender does not manifest in the physical, material realms but rather that the manifestations are misunderstood because the Principle is generally misunderstood. Male and female sexuality, male and female reproductive organs….these things are the most basic manifestations of this Principle and they do no justice to anyone trying to understand the Principle for what it really is. We must set aside these ideas to better understand the concepts at hand.
For the purpose of understanding, let us simplify this idea to a manifestation that almost everyone can recognize. Remembering that All is Mind, the Universe is Mental, we can see how the mental manifestation of this Principle might lead us to the greatest level of understanding. So what is the mental manifestation? In modern times, we often divide our minds into two distinct sections – the subconscious and the conscious minds. Such distinction is simply a recognition of the mental manifestation of The Principle of Gender. The Masculine Principle manifests via the conscious mind and the Feminine Principle manifests via the subconscious. The conscious mind, or Masculine Principle, is always focused on giving out or expressing information while the subconscious mind, or Feminine Principle, is always focused on receiving information. This coincides with the physical manifestation of gender as the male organs give while the female organs receive.
Another way that this Principle can be understood is yet another manifestation on the mental level. Besides dividing our mind into two operating platforms, we have also divided it into two separate methods of thinking. Many are familiar with the left brain/right brain dichotomy. The left is considered the logical, analytical side while the right is considered the intuitive, emotional, creative side. The left side thinking is the Masculine Principle while the right side thinking is the Feminine Principle.
Hopefully, the reader has a better understanding of The Principle of Gender at this point. It is closely tied to the Principles of Polarity and Rhythm as all Principles validate and corroborate one another while expanding upon intricacies of their own. When we apply this Principle to the Big Bang Theory, we can see how easy it is to relate the expansion of the Universe due to the Big Bang as being the Masculine Principle due to its ‘giving’ and expressive nature. Without this expansion, none of the Universe could be expressed as it is. We can also relate the contraction of the Universe to the Feminine Principle due to its ‘receiving’ nature.
Conclusion
After this very brief explanation of how The Hermetic Principles validate the Big Bang while the Big Bang validates The Hermetic Principles (Principle of Correspondence…), it should be more than obvious that these Principles are ever present in our Universe. By combining modern science and the system of doubt that it adheres to with The Hermetic Principles, one can understand the nature of the Universe to a much higher degree. If an idea cannot stand the test of The Principles and modern science, then that idea is a bad idea and it is not based on truth. Not only does the Hermetic Philosophy offer a way to Self-Mastery, it offers a way to evaluate the structural integrity of ideas and see if they hold water. If offers a way to understand that which we could not otherwise understand. Learn these Principles and apply them in daily life. Learn to see them in everything. Not only does this serve as a filter for hogwash and nonsense, it allows one greater control over the world around them. Through application of these Principles, one can use higher laws against lower laws and polarize themselves accordingly. Through in depth understanding of these Principles, one can move up the scale and become a Cause rather than simply an Effect. Instead of being a pawn, one can become a player of the game.
